Next year, we'll all meet in the Czech Republic for XML Prague. Markup UK will return in 2025.
Arrival and joining instructions
If attending in person, please make your way to the Mile End campus of Queen Mary University. The campus is located a short walk from two tube stations, Stepney Green and Mile End:
A detailed map of the campus, including building accessibility information, is available here. Full details are on the campus' own website.
You can enter the campus by the Clock Tower (no.20 on the map) onto Queens' Square. Please go straight to the Francis Bancroft Building (no.31), where the conference will take place. There is no need to go to main reception.
Once inside the Bancroft Building, you will find the Markup UK registration desk in the foyer.
For London public transport details, visit the TFL website.
Please note that rail strikes are planned for Wednesday, Friday and Saturday this week. For alerts and details of how this affects your journey, please visit the National Rail website. We understand that Eurostar and London Underground services are unaffected.
Zoom and virtual attendance
In view of this, please be aware that we will be circulating details of how to join the Friday and Saturday sessions via Zoom to all attendees, in case you were planning to attend in person but circumstances don't allow this.
We will be sending this information out via our Zoom account in time for the first session on Friday. If you have any difficulty joining, just email us, and we'll be happy to help.

Preconference Thursday?

The simple answer is yes. We'll be publishing more details in the coming weeks.

Call for Papers
This year's theme is markup quality assurance. How do we ensure quality in our semantics, processing, and publishing? Is there such a thing as good markup
, or bad
, for that matter? Head over to the speakers page for more information!
Or, submit your abstract now.

The Organizing Committee
Markup UK 2023
Markup UK and XML Prague Joint Announcement
The XML Prague and Markup UK conferences have between them provided the markup community with a unique opportunity to meet, learn, and share ideas for many years. Over the last two years, the global pandemic has had a considerable impact on physical conferences – some have had to be cancelled, others have taken place online or in hybrid form. It seems that the winter season will be affected by COVID-19 in the coming years and that it will no longer be a good time of year to hold a conference.
The organising committees of both conferences have been considering how best to serve the markup community under these new conditions. We are pleased to announce a solution that will enable as many XML experts and users to meet together as possible. From 2022, both Markup UK and XML Prague will be held in alternate years, starting with XML Prague. We are looking forward to meeting you in June 2022 in Prague and in May/June 2023 in London.
For more information, please see https://www.xmlprague.cz/ and https://markupuk.org/ and the usual social media channels.

2021 Archived
The 2021 proceedings are available in HTML and PDF formats.
The 2021 Markup UK conference is now over.
Many thanks to everyone involved - attendees, speakers, sponsors, and organisers - for making this year's conference happen. See you next year, hopefully in person!
Steven Pemberton's two-part XForms tutorial, with Part 1 on Friday morning and Part 2 on Saturday morning, requires a small amount of software to be installed.
While you can follow the tutorial online, you need to download the software (Gzipped tarball for Linux/MacOS or zip archive for Windows) to do the exercises yourself. Further instructions will be provided to the attendees in the coming days.
Registration is now open!
Head over to the registration form and join us on 21-22 May.
The CFP is now closed.
Registration, on the other hand, will open very shortly. We promise!
A Clarification Is in Order
We're NOT going to make any recorded presentations available after the 2021 conference, nor will we keep said recordings. We've been considering prerecording some or all conference presentations after experiencing first-hand the realities of online presentations during the past year, but also because when Markup UK 2021 was still to happen in hybrid format, it was a simple way of ensuring that the show can go on, regardless of last-minute changes to the global situation.
Important Dates
We've added some important dates to the Schedule page.
2021 CFP Now Open
This year's theme is The Future of Distributed Markup Systems. If you have a story to tell, find out more here!
The 2020 Webinars Are Available on YouTube
Head over to our YouTube channel to watch.
Thank You!
Sadly, June and our webinar sessions are now both over. Huge thanks must go to our presenters, Achim Berndzen, David Maus, Liam Quin, Adam Retter, and Erik Siegel, but also to everyone who attended.
2020 Conference Cancelled
Due to the extraordinary circumstances, we've had no option but to cancel this year's conference.
Unfortunately, the ever-increasing risks associated with the widespread coronavirus have led us to a decision that, although appropriate under these unique circumstances, undoubtedly will be disappointing to many. This year's conference has been cancelled and we'll be working towards returning in 2021.
Those of you who already registered will, of course, be refunded in full.
Thank you for your interest and support, and please stay safe.
Regarding the Covid-19 Crisis
We're currently looking into what the current crisis will mean for this year's Markup UK conference and will publish more shortly. Stay tuned.
Power to the People!
This year's theme is Power to the People. It's all about enabling users and make sure markup serves them rather than the other way around. Do you have a story to tell? Tell us!
Preconference Slots Available
If you have an idea for a preconference tutorial, workshop, or meeting, head over to the Speakers page for more information.
