Oxygen Authoring Tool
Not everyone loves writing their paper in emacs!
If only there were a freely available online editor, which:
- Is beautiful and intuitive to use
- Understands and writes native XML
- Produces and checks the appropriate DocBook XML format
- Allows on-the-fly PDF previews
Well, there is now! And because it's provided by SyncroSoft, you can also clone, edit, and generate the PDF previews directly in Oxygen XML Editor.
Using the online editor
Simply follow these instructions:
Set Up My Paper
Note that the "Deploy to Netlify" button on that page will clone the original repository for you.
Running locally
- Deploy the online editor, above; if you don't want to do so, you can also clone the project locally.
- Open the .xpr file in Oxygen XML Editor
- From the project view, open the paper.xml file
Preliminary Programme Announced
See the preliminary programme for our great lineup of speakers with topics ranging from railway engineering to Schematron Quick Fixes!
Authors Notified
We've notified the authors and are working hard to publish more details about this year's programme!
Author Notification
Due to the number of excellent papers and the fact that the review period was split in two by the Easter holidays, we are a few days late with notifying the authors. Apologies for this! We will, of course, move other deadlines accordingly to allow authors to complete their papers.
Submitting Papers
If you're accepted, we'd like your papers in DocBook 5 format. Stay tuned for more on this!
CFP Is Now Closed
The Call for Papers is now closed. Thank you, authors, for making Markup UK happen!
Call for Papers Now Open!
If you have any questions about submitting an abstract, about the kind of topic that might suit our audience, or about anything else to do with speaking at Markup UK, please don't hesitate to contact us. If this is your first time submitting an abstract, we'd particularly love to hear from you.
The theme for Markup UK 2019 will be "Beyond the Bricks"
We encourage stories about bringing markup building blocks together to form packaged solutions, projects, or frameworks.
We would love to hear about endeavours to shorten the distance between using the bricks and building the house: orchestration, continuous delivery, testing solutions, managment, DocOps solutions...
Beyond the Theme: general proposals for papers
We also welcome proposals for papers on any markup-related theme, particularly those about the use of markup in the humanities, linguistics, cultural heritage, publishing, and education. Whether you have a user story to tell, a project to present, challenges to discuss, or solutions to propose, we want to hear from you!
Submission process
At the moment we would like to see extended abstracts of 500 words or more - we will ask for full papers for all accepted abstracts before the conference.
We are using the Microsoft CMT system again this year for managing abstract submissions and peer review. Before submitting an abstract, please register as an author at https://cmt3.research.microsoft.com/MARKUPUK2019/Submission/Index.
(Please note that we will offer one free registration for each accepted paper, so if you are submitting an abstract wait to hear from us before registering. EarlyBird rates will still apply for a short while after you are notified whether your paper has been selected.)

Paper Submission
The conference audience will be a good mixture of markup geeks, academics, publishers, software engineers, and end users.
When you submit an abstract, it will be reviewed by our Programme Committee. If your abstract is accepted, you'll write it up as a full paper for inclusion in the conference proceedings, and as a 25 minute presentation for the conference itself.
